Earth hour

“If I lose the light of the sun, I will write by candlelight, moonlight, no light. If I lose paper and ink, I will write in blood on the forgotten walls. I will write always. I will capture nights all over the world and bring them to you.” Henry Rollins

Around the world, cities are participating in Earth Hour this weekend. This event encourages individuals to turn their lights off for an hour Saturday, March 29, from 8 - 9 PM. Businesses are also inventively participating. If your imagination needs a jump start, here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • Write or paint by candlelight
  • Invite guests over for a candlelit dinner party
  • Enjoy an evening with your loved ones
  • Play card or board games
  • Tell ghost stories
  • A relaxing candlelit bubble bath
  • Star gaze
  • Roast marshmallows around the fireplace

Will we make a difference? I read an interesting article at Time “Earth Hour ‘08: Will it Matter?” The point the article makes is this, that whether or not it makes a difference environmentally, attention is drawn to the issue. To quote Carter Roberts, the head of the WWF which is sponsoring the event, it “will make a statement about our commitment to solve the climate change problem and symbolize the commitment that people will make throughout the rest of the year.”

Whatever our personal opinion or non-opinion on the human role in the climate change issue, with a little imagination it will make for an interesting evening. Who knows, it may even lead to a monthly or weekly ritual…

  1. I believe it does matter. We turned off the lights and turned on the fireplace and sat and talked. We being: my husband and two kids. I appreciate anything that gives us a chance to slow things down and better ourselves.
