March is nutrition month
It’s week 2 of the Simple Steps program. Each week the program introduces 4 new habits, one each for nutrition, fitness, home and self. The trick is that they accumulate, so obviously, you have to keep doing the ones from the previous weeks. This week’s (new) habits are:
- I am keeping a daily food journal
- I am squeezing in some isometrics every day.
- I am maintaining an efficient laundry system.
- I am following a daily to-do list.
Along with last week’s: - I am drinking 8 cups of water a day.
- I am walking 20 minutes a day.
- I am clearing out one drawer/cupboard/closet weekly.
- I am saving $2.00/day.
None of the habits this week are new for me, aside from adopting the food journal, which is not on my to-do list. If you are interested, there are many online programs that can help you do that, such as EATracker.ca.
But then I got an email in my inbox informing me that March is nutrition month. So I’ve decided to use this week to increase my daily fruits/veggies (preferably raw) by ensuring that I am eating at least one dark green and one orange or red veggie or fruit per day. They are rich in antioxidants, which we all know are good for us.
That is my new habit for this week, along with keeping up with LAST weeks habits and preparing for NEXT weeks habits by researching multivitamins and cleaning out a desk drawer. Or two. Hint hint.

WOW! I wish I could be as methodical as you. It could be because I’m a man, and therefore not so good at multi tasking, but I can only follow a few steps at a time.
The water intake is vital, I learned that following my transplant, and now have to consume 3 to 5 litres per day for optimum health. People often forget how much of the body is made of water, and how we need to replenish our levels to optimise health and brain function.
My wife has just gone to Curves again ( 3 times a week now and she’s lost 9 inches overall), and we’re both already feeling fitter and healthier. I’ve even cut down on my chocolate intake, a minor miracle!
Nobody ever said it would be easy, but it sure is very satisfying to see the results.
Hi Floog! I’m not really methodical. It’s just that I’ve discovered when I add one habit at a time, and make it a part of my lifestyle, then it’s not not something that I have to remember. Like brushing my teeth. Or washing the dishes; it’s not a chore, it’s just what I do when we’re done eating…
I’ve managed to fit weights into my life that way, and walking has always been a part of my life. So has yoga, but for some reason, it cycles, so I’m still working on that… I used to really live on the spur of the moment bk (before kids) but now that we’re home schooling together, it takes more effort and planning to keep all of their academics and activities rolling smoothly as well as take care of myself, mr m and the home.
It sounds like you and your wife are really looking after yourselves well. Congrats! I love that you describe your success in terms of feeling fitter & healthier! Perfect! Chocolate is one of my favorite treats too, especially dark…one of these days I’ll have to write about the health benefits of chocolate
THis is very good and motivating! Thank-you for sharing. I am traveling this week, so I have to even more aware of my habits as it is easy to not take care of yourself when you are on the road living out of a hotel room.
Wow! I’m totally impressed with your habits! You are a great role-model.
#s 7&8 are a challenge still for me, but I’m working on it. I did clean out two closets and collect two big bags for donation, thanks to you!
PS What a gorgeous photo!
Thanks for the kind words Mark. I also appreciated your post on giving, very motivational!
Thanks for the encouragement Keli! Wow, 2 closets! I only got one done, and that with working on it on a daily basis…but we got two big bags for donation too. Feels good
This week it’s my desk. I should do a before and after pic…errr, maybe not…
hi! I am trying to keep up with most of what was mentioned above. I am particularly fussy about my eight cups of water a day (I drink a litre a day).
Hi Wen,
Yes, it’s so important to stay hydrated…I notice that water replaces some of the caffeinated drinks in my life…
