New habits, simple steps
After a few gorgeous days here on the west coast, spring has arrived…I haven’t posted for awhile. We’ve been deeply immersed in our various activities, guests, and the end of term 2.
In between that, I’ve been reading. My current book/project is Simple Steps, by Lisa Lelas, Linda McClintock and Beverly Zingarella. This is a ten-week program to give your lifestyle an overhaul by establishing simple new habits each week; diet, fitness, home and self.
I’m not looking for an overhaul, but I always welcome reminders, focus, motivation and fun. Since (I’ve read ahead, and) some of these habits I’ve already established, it shouldn’t be too difficult. Week one’s (new) habits are:
- Drink 8 cups of water every day
- Take a 20 minute brisk walk every day
- Clean out a drawer, cabinet or closet every week
- Start saving $2.00 (+ change) every day
Pretty simple first week… I’ll keep you posted…

Hi! Ok, it’s confession time for me. Please forgive me! But I will try to make amends. This is what I do, but having read your advise, I’ll try to change my ways.
1. Drink 8 cans of diet coke every day.
2. Take forever walking around looking for things I’ve misplaced.
3. Clean out my hotmail far too often.
4. Started saving $2.00 every day just to park at work.
Once again, thank you for the good advise and I’ll let you know how I get on! - Take Care
Hi Peter! Thanks for the giggle
While we’re baring our souls, cola is one of my indulgences as well…and I usually end up using my spare change for the skytrain…
PS Walking around looking for things still counts! (as long as you’re walking briskly)
Wonderful advice! I’m happy to report that I actually follow #s 1 & 2. However, 3 and 4 are another story. Clean every week and save money? I still can’t find where I put the garage door opener from when we moved 8 months ago!
PS I got the book you mentioned a post or two ago - Ultra Longevity. Very good!
Wow, very good advice indeed! thanks for sharing
This post struck a chord with me. My wife and I recently began a bit of a health/stealth & wealth overhaul after a year in the doldrums following the untimely death of our mum out in Sidney, BC. My Canadian sister in law and my wife suddenly realised we’ve all been feeling the same way, and now, a year on, it’s time to motivate ourselves again.
My wife and I started changing our lifestyle a little, not thinking of it as a diet. Two months down the line and I’ve lost 11kg’s and my wife had her monthly ‘Curves’ weigh-in, revealing a 9 inch overall weight loss and a drop i dress size. Brilliant.
We too, have always done the £1 in the jar bit, and it goes towards little treats in life. Our goal is set for this September and a month in Vancouver, Sidney, Seattle, Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon being four big kids, so the jar money will be for spending. We aim to travel light and arrive leaner, meaner and fitter, buying a new wardrobe of clothes in Vancouver.
I wish I could get my wife to tidy a drawer, like ever! I’m the tidy one in the house.
I’m glad you enjoyed the book too Keli!
Thanks Wen! I had a lot of catching up to do at your blog…I’m glad you had a nice visit to Rome!
Congratulations on your (& wifie’s) successes Floog! It’s amazing how much of a difference little steps can make.
On that note…I started the closet at the beginning of the week and doing a little bit a day, since I knew we’d never accomplish it in one day!
