Stop the abuse - children’s rights
Learning about the things that are being suffered by children around the world is heartbreaking; child soldiering, displacement, malnutrition and starvation, human trafficking, labor, violence, torture and forced prostitution. Closer to home our concern is child abuse, bullying, poverty, neglect.
November 20 is National Child Day in Canada, the day the government commemorates the adoption of two UN human rights documents: the Declaration of the Rights of the Child in 1959 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989 .
The UN CRC covers a full spectrum of children rights: the right to protection against neglect and abuse, the right to necessities such as food, water and shelter, as well as development and participation rights. These rights are universal, regardless of circumstances.
However many governments ratify this agreement, it will mean nothing if they don’t live up to their words.
Improved gender equality and women’s rights will go a long way to improving children’s rights. Working towards peace and ending hunger are also essential.
Let’s educate ourselves and spread the word. Each small step counts towards the goal.
