No excuses

Change of season seems to make keeping up with healthy habits a challenge for me. This past week I noticed some things I’ve let drop; I’ve been drinking more coffee, and I haven’t done my weights for a while.

Since journaling can be very therapeutic, here are my excuses:

  • It’s colder and dark longer.
  • Coffee is just more appealing than water.
  • Here on our beautiful wet coast, curled up with a book indoors means warm and dry.
  • It’s harder for me to get everything done before the children get up, and when they do get up, there are academics to get done over their morning hot chocolate herbal tea…
  • That lecture that I went to last month where the instructor was an iron pumping instructor. It was supposed to motivate me, but it just didn’t. He didn’t seem impressed with my at home dumbbell routine either. Or yoga.

The only way weights are going to happen for me right now is if my dumbbells are in easy reach, right on the way to the coffee machine. And being able to do it in 12 minutes means that anyone could fit it into their day–into a bathroom trip if they had to.

So I pour myself a glass of water, reacquaint myself with my weights. After a few days I am feeling more energetic, fitting more into my day. I check out a new power yoga DVD. Excuses are for wimps.

  1. I hear you loud and clear. I’ve been remiss with my exercise routine now that’s it’s a bit chillier and I’ve been neglecting my sit-ups. I have no excuse. But I do realize how much better I feel when I do these things. In fact, you’ve just helped me motivate myself so I’m off. Thank you!

  2. Thank you for the motivation.

  3. I turned into an exercise addict about 4 years ago. Prior to that I used every excuse under the hot Aussie sun not to do any. I love it now that I can work out indoors at home and work. With the music up loud and no one around, it’s a good place to unwind and relax. My motivation comes from wanting to stay in the job longer and still be able to drink coffe with three sugars.

  4. Thank you all for the comments! It’s motivating for me to hear about other people’s motivation :) I imagine it can be challenging to be motivated in a hot climate. When we lived in the WI, the main exercise I got (other than at the beach) was indoors and air-conditioned (yoga, of course…)
