I wish hip circles counted!
I’ve now installed the software for the Omron 720 and am learning how to use it. I have programmed in two goals–one for total steps, and one for aerobic steps–and download my daily data from the pedometer. Day 5, and I’m thinking I’ve set my goals a little on the high side, since so far I don’t have any little smiley faces.
This pedometer measures steps quite accurately on average. My son and I did some testing at the playground. Every time we tested 100 steps, it was accurate within a step or two; regardless if it was being worn or in our pockets. Swinging does not add any steps or burn any calories though, no matter how hard you are pumping your legs. Neither does working the monkey bars.
In order to measure Aerobic Steps, the following two conditions must be met:
- Walk more than 60 steps per minute.
- Walk for more than 10 minutes continuously.
I was very surprised to find that when I did my 25 minute cardio kick boxing workout, it counted as NO aerobic steps. I think it has something to do with the stride length; since jumping jacks or kicks are not really strides, the pedometer can’t register them as Aerobic Steps. Since there is no walking involved, my weight training doesn’t register on the pedometer. Hip circles don’t count either.
A jog to the kid’s club didn’t register, as we made it in just under 10 minutes. In order for any aerobic effort to count, it will have to be in steps, and I’ll have to stride around the block another time until I hit the 10 minute mark. I’m realizing that this pedometer may not register most of my workouts. I may have to start training for a marathon in order to meet my goals.
I’ll have to do some more experimenting. I promise to divulge whatever secrets I uncover…

More than 60 steps a minute? Tough!!
I wonder how a pedometer “knows” the difference between a step and a jump? Keeping up with your exercise program makes me tired, though..lol. So, I hope you’ll relax long enough to participate in my middle name meme!
