Grossology: the impolite science of the human body!
Today was spent with the children at the Vancouver Science World, where the current featured exhibition is “Grossology: The Impolite Science of the Human Body!” Everything you could want to know about how the human body works, and then some. Not only did the children have a great time, running around to all the exhibits, brainteasers and games, but they also got a lot of exercise and learned a few things in the process.
In the Eureka! Gallery, the children pulled themselves up in giant pulley systems, then lifted a giant 200 KG hippo. They danced to tunes in a little room with beams of colored light and an infra red camera, and made body shadows in the shadow room. It was also hard to tear them away from the Ball Rapids, where they invented their own games with other children, chasing the balls and climbing the ladder. There was plenty of opportunity for creativity and experiments in Contraption Corner.
Simulated skiing, wheelchair races, and other energy experiments also provided a lot of fun–and exercise. We were there until closing, and the children are eager to go back.
According to my best calculations using the charts, calories burned in 5 hours of chasing the kids around Science World: 897.
